Day 1 LIV Golf London Results

Day 1 LIV Golf London Results

The first day of play for the brand-new  LIV Golf league is in the books, with the LIV Golf Invitational Series teeing off on Thursday in London, after months of anticipation and controversy.

South Africans Charl Schwartzel and Hennie du Plessis led the field after the opening round. Schwartzel claimed the lead after a 5-under 65 on Thursday, with Du Plessis one stroke behind at 4 under. Phil Mickelson and Dustin Johnson shared for seventh place after shooting 1-under 69s.

Following the tee-off, the PGA Tour suspended the 17 competitors in the tournament. Players that play in LIV tournaments are unable to compete on the PGA Tour or any other circuits sanctioned by the PGA Tour. Players who compete in future LIV Golf tournaments will incur the same penalty.

Here's how the leaderboard looks as of Thursday. LIV tournaments are 54 holes, thus there are two rounds left.

Rocket Mortgage has ended its sponsorship agreement with Bryson DeChambeau, citing his links to the LIV Golf Invitational Series.

Due to his apparent commitment to the Saudi-funded LIV Golf Invitational Series, Rocket Mortgage has terminated its sponsorship agreement with Bryson DeChambeau.

The first tournament on the contentious circuit teed off Thursday outside of London, and the lineup included Phil Mickelson, Dustin Johnson, Sergio Garcia, and 45 other players.

According to a source, DeChambeau will compete in the second event of the LIV series in Portland, Oregon, commencing June 30. He has yet to make a formal announcement about his choice.

Rocket Mortgage spokesman Aaron Emerson confirmed the breakup on Thursday, citing DeChambeau's decision to join LIV as the reason.

"Rocket Mortgage has long been a supporter of the PGA Tour, both as an official partner and an event host," Emerson said in a statement. "The Rocket Mortgage Classic has rapidly become a Tour staple, with players travelling to Detroit to compete while simultaneously generating critical cash to help bridge our city's digital divide." Our PGA Tour alliance includes numerous renowned players, like Bryson DeChambeau, who serve as brand ambassadors for the Rocket Mortgage brand. As previously announced, Bryson chose to participate in the LIV Golf Series.

"Rocket Mortgage has terminated its sponsorship relationship with Bryson, effective immediately." We wish him the best of luck in his future endeavours."

DeChambeau won the PGA Tour's Rocket Mortgage Classic in Detroit in 2020 and soon after signed a partner with the business.

His sponsorship loss because of LIV ties is not unusual among players. RBC severed connections with Johnson, and Mickelson lost the majority of his sponsors after statements he made earlier this year against the new league and Saudi Arabia's human rights concerns, which purportedly included the assassination of Washington Post writer Jamal Khashoggi in 2018.

Throughout Thursday's first round in England, players were spotted sporting caps and shirts with Adidas, TaylorMade, Ping, Srixon, Citi, and other brand logos.

When approached by ESPN on Wednesday, TaylorMade said it had no comment on future plans, and Adidas did not respond.
